Crystal with an Inclusion of Empathy explores the nature of empathy through the metaphor of a mineral inclusion. It is constructed from pages taken from catalogues of international jewellery exhibitions, intertwined and transformed into a crystalline form. Hidden within the paper “crystal,” the images of precious jewellery lose their original function and become a metaphor for the value of human understanding. The combination of fragile paper and a sterling silver structure brings together vulnerability and resilience. The work reflects on the human capacity to move beyond personal experience, suggesting that empathy emerges through openness to another person and the willingness to see the world through their eyes.
