Vitba River

A legend about the origin of the Vitba River in the Belarusian city of Vitebsk.
...Once long ago, a tribe came down from the Black Mountains. The forest was still alive then: branches-arms, little twigs-fingers. Everyone hurried forward, and only one young girl lagged behind. The surrounding seemed so mysterious that one wanted to stop and look. It was only when the forest closed around the girl in a thicket that she came to her senses. No footprints, no voices. The despair that gripped the girl pushed her forward, and the tears pouring from her eyes could hardly keep up with her. The girl was winding and circling, and after her the river was winding among the green hills...
