Legend of the Castle Hill is inspired by an old Belarusian legend about a princess-sorceress said to dwell beneath Castle Hill in Vitebsk. Dressed in white and surrounded by lions and hidden treasures, she would appear only on the eve of Ivan Kupala. According to the legend, anyone attempting to claim her gold would see it turn to dust, while the princess herself would vanish. The painting explores the princess as an archetypal figure suspended between myth and memory. The lions, imagined architecture, and luminous female figure create a symbolic landscape where protection, desire, and disappearance coexist. The work reflects on the fragile nature of what we seek to possess, suggesting that the most valuable things—memory, beauty, and inner light—cannot be held or owned.
